Two pavilions raised for that exposition, one for France and one for Québec, were joined and reworked into the building in use now. The island lies in the Saint Lawrence within reach of downtown, and is approached by bridge or by the island station on the metro line.
The stepped outline of the exposition pavilions survives on the outside, and inside an atrium carries up through several floors behind tall window walls. Restaurants sit on more than one level, and a seated hall holds a programme of concerts through the year. Terraces face the water and the city skyline.
